Environmental Statement
All of Odyssey’s current projects involve subsea ocean mineral resource development. Environmental considerations are deeply ingrained into every aspect of our business and operating framework from the start. We advance projects only when supported by science showing they can be conducted responsibly. Our methods adapt to the environmental characteristics of each project area, with project-specific information on assessments, mitigation strategies, and monitoring available where applicable.
Environmental Management
Our science and marine operations teams incorporate the following approaches to mitigate environmental impacts when developing exploration programs.
Compliance: We adhere to local and international environmental laws, rules, and standards, reinforced through robust policies, processes, and oversight. This enables accountability and transparency as we implement best practices for environmental stewardship.
Industry Expertise: We engage internal and external environmental experts to lead research studies and environmental impact assessments. This is done alongside local stakeholders to understand their relationship with the ocean and to help ensure our activities respect local sea users and ecosystems.
Science-Based Approach: Odyssey, project investors and partners, and regulatory authorities proceed with dredging, mining, or harvesting only once a scientific approach is agreed upon, necessary permits obtained, and environmental impacts understood and acceptable.
Important considerations during research include limiting sound, minimizing materials released into water columns, and avoiding release of pollutants or harmful toxic materials. Odyssey has never filed a pollution claim with its insurers. These measures help reduce potential impacts on biodiversity.
Each exploration project includes environmental surveys and studies informing an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Our surveys follow local jurisdictional requirements and generally align with International Seabed Authority (ISA) recommendations. Baseline assessments guide mitigation strategies to minimize environmental impact. Areas of focus include chemistry, biology, ecosystems analysis, and physical oceanography.
To align with global standards, each project is conducted under the supervision of a Chief Environmental Scientist and a Qualified or Competent Person. A Seabed Mineral Advisory Board also provides guidance.
Odyssey is committed to transparency in environmental information. We share data with partners, host governments, and academic institutions when not commercially confidential and encourage publication and peer review.
Biodiversity
In 2023, Odyssey conducted a natural capital risk analysis using the Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosure (TNFD) as a guide. This increased understanding of nature-related risks and opportunities, confirming that impacts and dependencies vary by project due to localized biodiversity. This analysis supports monitoring, future planning, and enhanced tracking and disclosure of metrics.
